One of the most important things I have learned from 15 years of teaching experience in the public, private, and homeschooling sectors is that, when it comes to instruction and learning, not all students are neurologically wired to absorb and process information in the same way. For me, nothing has confirmed this truth more than being a parent of a son with both ADHD and dyslexia.
As a twice exceptional child, my son struggled
to keep pace as expected for his age when it came to language processing and executive functioning skills, even though he was very bright. Needless to say, given these challenges, school was an emotionally and cognitively exhausting experience for him. As his mom, I can certainly understand and identify with parents who struggle to find effective solutions to help their children feel more competent and successful in school. Had I known then all that I know now, my husband and I would likely have made vastly different choices about the method and course of our son's education .
It is my own family's difficult and complicated history with my son's learning difference that now serves as the catalyst and inspiration for the ReadWrite Clinic. It is why I am so passionate about the work I do. It is what compels me to hone my skills through continuing education on dyslexia and ADHD; learning how to more astutely recognize their subtler symptoms, more effectively mitigate their impact on learning, and harness their distinctively positive features to help students better appreciate, activate, and showcase their unique and valuable gifts and strengths.
I count it both a privilege and a pleasure to be able to instruct and support students along the path to literacy, and I am especially excited that the ReadWrite Clinic affords me the means through which I can compassionately labor to turn the tide for students like my son. A Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology, Master’s of Science Degree in Education (Reading Specialization), Comprehensive Orton-Gillingham training, and years of experience in elementary and intermediate education have provided me with the tools and expertise needed to make that crucial difference in the lives of these young people.
Thank you so much in advance for the opportunity to serve you and your child.
Sincerely,
